Lifestyles Center Blog

If you haven’t already been affected by stress, chances are you will soon. Group presentations, papers and finals are approaching fast. This time of the semester can be pretty hard on us college students, because commitments and responsibilities seem to just pile on. We could use a little good news about how to beat stress, so here are some interesting facts you may not have known:

  • “Laughter is the best medicine.” There is truth to this statement, because laughter actually lowers cortisol, adrenaline and epinephrine levels and releases dopamine (a feel-good hormone)
  • Chewing gum releases tension in the jaw, a common place for stress to affect.
  • Cocoa and chocolate can reduce stress, because of the antioxidants that they have.
  • You are not alone! A majority of the American population goes through stressful time periods about every 2 weeks.

Don’t forget to stop in the counseling center, even if you just want to talk.
