HUMP DAY ARTICLE: E-Cigarettes and You
A common perception is that e-cigarettes, because of the absence of actual smoke, are a healthy alternative to regular cigarettes. A recent article in The Daily Beast challenged this by bringing up the side effects that many might want to ignore:
- Lung irritation and asthma– Chemicals in the vapor of e-cigarettes are irritants that definitely do some damage on your lungs over time. They have also been shown to link to asthma attacks and increase your risk of lung cancer.
- Nicotine- E-cigarettes still have just as much, if not more, nicotine. From this, you can get nicotine poisoning and increase your risk for atherosclerosis. That means arteries stiffen, and it leads to heart attacks.
- Heart and exercise– Besides atherosclerosis, the nicotine in e-cigs also constrict blood vessels. Those who exercise regularly will find their fitness impaired. With a weakened circulatory system, it makes it harder to develop good exercise habits.
